Why is Christmas An Excellent Idea - The Greatest Gifts

An old work colleague of mine once said to me as Christmas was approaching one year, "I think Christmas is a really good idea". Somewhat puzzled I asked him what he meant and his elaboration went something like this, "You know, Christmas, Jesus and all that, baby sent to save the world with peace and stuff".

I should explain if it wasn't already obvious that this wasn't a religious person at all and I am not about to divulge my spiritual persuasions here either but what an incredible statement from someone that isn't a believer as such.

He went on to say that although he didn't believe, the idea itself was wonderful. That there might be a loving God out there somewhere who would send his baby son to live as a human in order to bring peace to everything that humankind had so royally messed up!

Of course many people today are completely unaware of the origins of Christmas and are oblivious to the reasons why they are having some time off work, why they are buying and receiving gifts, having Christmas "celebration" parties without actually knowing what the celebration is intended to be all about, yet this guy was thinking about it and realising it all seemed to be a pretty good idea.

Of course this resulted in me having a good old think about things, and you know what, regardless of what spiritual beliefs we may have or whether we have any beliefs at all, the actual model laid out in the Christmas story is nothing short of wonderful!

Humans mess up the world, God sends innocent child to show us how it should be done by living a perfectly peaceful life, being kind to everyone He meets, forgiving His enemies as well as His friends and being completely gentle in the process.

Made up story, magical myth, historic fact or divine revelation, whichever category we happen to be in, it is hard to deny that Christmas really is an excellent idea.

It might be worth us all reflecting on the meaning and the model of the Christmas story, for even if it is just simply a good idea, it may well inspire us to improve the world around us just a little bit.

hi julian,

i love the idea behind christmas, i just don' like the materialistic part, especially for those who have small children, and can't afford gifts. then, the children are teased. i have trimmed down the presents and lights and insist on that day being dedicated to family, friends, and the baby Jesus. i can't see that the stress of trying to come up with money, and shopping in a hundred stores, is want Jesus would have wanted for his birthday.

thank you for sharing this with us, and i appreciate you joining my fan club.

my best regards,
