Who is Britney Spears dating now? What is the latest controversy or so called "scandal" her name is attached to? How brightly is Britney's star currently shining and is she singing live or miming? How is Robbie Williams' much heralded and much anticipated return to pop music being received? Will people buy his new album in their millions or has the world moved on to the next big' thing?

Who was the latest hopeful to be voted off the " X Factor" or " American Idol", whose feet weren't moving enough in the latest episodes of " Strictly Come Dancing" and " Dancing with the Stars"? Who are the latest famous' or perhaps infamous' people willing to live in the jungle with television cameras on them twenty four hours a day, in the hope that their stock will rise once more?

How many people tuned in to see the New York Yankees triumph in the World Series recently? How many followers do the Kardashian sisters have on Twitter and what happened on the latest episode of their television series?

Perhaps, eventually when all the celebrity gossip has been read, all the sport has been caught up with and our favourite television programmes dissected, we may consider what might actually be happening in the real world. You know the one, the one with wars, famine and financial crisis.

It may be an indictment on the current state of the world or the humanity that occupies it, that real news is often way down the list of things to read about as we seek a constant escapism from all things unglamorous and "ordinary". However, the one thing that unifies all these things and answers many, if not all of the questions above is the power of the internet and its ability to deliver and drive all the information around the globe.

When Michael Jackson died suddenly in June, Twitter ground to a halt because of the overwhelming clamour for news of the deceased "King of Pop". Some celebrities have millions of followers, hanging on their every "Tweet" and businesses are now using Twitter as a launching ground for promotion and indeed sales.

Google Trends (which seems to be updated almost by the minute) can tell you the most popular internet searches of the hour, once again dominated by celebrity gossip, and a simple click will take you to the relevant stories.

If you are a writer, seeking mass market internet appeal then these applications may need to be your first point of call. Perhaps until your writing is established, and searched for because people recognise its quality, you may have to write about subjects you would prefer not to. Does this mean you have to compromise your writing style? You decide.
