Going to the movies has always and perhaps always will be associated with dating or courting. Perhaps it's a safe environment early in the dating ritual, to be together and to begin enjoying each others company without the pressure of lengthy in depth and what can sometimes be nerve wracking conversation.

Does it matter what movies you go to see? Will the films you see dictate the outcome of your relationship? What if the guy chooses all the movies? Will all the explosions and blood have the girl running for the nearest cover? How about if the girl makes all the film choices? Will a romcom frenzy have your guy reaching for the sick bucket and a sharp exit?

The following is an account of a man and a woman and of the fifteen movies they saw while they were dating. What were their observations and discoveries? Which films had them both cheering or jeering and was their any kind of pattern to their movie watching?

Apart from number one and fifteen, being the first and last movies they saw while dating there is no particular order in which the movies were watched, although the most fanatical movie fans can probably work out the order by tracking back through the movie release dates.

  1. Hancock (starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron). Despite her being a big Will Smith fan, he enjoyed the movie more, but they both agreed it was a perfectly acceptable popcorn film that lost its way toward the end.
  2. Yes Man (starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel). Both left the movie theatre feeling underwhelmed and disappointed, expecting a much higher "giggle per popcorn ratio".
  3. Quantum of Solace (starring Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko and Judi Dench). Both loved the latest slice of 007 action, despite many reviewers being slightly disappointed with this James Bond sequel to Casino Royale.
  4. House Bunny (starring Anna Faris, Colin Hanks and Emma Stone). He really didn't want to see this movie but he knew a proper chick flick was long overdue. She loved it, he didn't!
  5. Get Smart (starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson).Another disappointing slice of comedy, not helped by the movie theatre's sound system which made everything echo. Both in agreement.
  6. Step Brothers (Starring Will Ferrell, John C Reilly, Mary Steenburgen and the underrated Richard Jenkins). Genuine laugh out loud moments for both him and her but perhaps a little too much "gross out" humour for either of them to feel entirely comfortable.
  7. Mamma Mia (starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters). He begged her not to go to this movie but relented because of her undying love for all things Abba. About half an hour in and despite the beautiful scenery, the singing and dancing was in full flow and she was begging him to leave the cinema. He giggled and insisted they stay an extra twenty minutes before they both escaped into the night air relieved! Probably the only two people who didn't like the film. (or at least watch it all the way through)
  8. Tropic Thunder (starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black) He enjoyed it more than her but they both agreed they were expecting it to be far, far funnier than it was. An absolutely hilarious cameo from Tom Cruise was the films main saving grace.
  9. Australia (starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman) Baz Luhrmann's long awaited outback epic was enjoyed by both. Beautifully shot, but seats near the front and a near 3 hour running time meant the movie lasted an hour too long! The warmth from the Australian desert was not enough to prevent both him and her almost perishing during the freezing cold walk back into town.
  10. Ghost Town (starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni). A pleasant surprise all around! A really genuine funny, "laugh out loud more than a few times" comedy. A hit for him and her.
  11. Knowing (starring Nicholas Cage, Rose Byrne and Nicholas Cage's hair). The couple travelled to a movie theatre far, far away to see this one and whilst far from a disastrous disaster film, not knowing would have been just as fun.
  12. Seven Pounds (starring Will Smith, Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson). Thumbs up from him and her, beautifully acted and very emotional, this is a contender for best film of the fifteen.
  13. Star Trek (starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and directed by J.J Abrams). Great movie and enjoyed by both. Enough said.
  14. Gran Torino (Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood). She didn't want to go and see this, thought it would be boring. She loved it and bought the DVD. He loved it too, but he knew he would. Classic Clint Eastwood.
  15. The Hangover (starring Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Heather Graham and Mike Tyson). Probably not the wisest movie to see right before their then upcoming wedding (with a plot of "groom goes missing in Las Vegas on his stag night") but they laughed and laughed and probably got away with it.
Looking back at the fifteen movies, it's fairly evident there is no definitive pattern to the movie watching but a mix of action, romance, comedy and a few really, really bad films ended with a real life wedding and now they can carry on their movie watching without the precarious pressures of dating.
