Vampires are once more the talk of the internet, with the word "vampires" riding high on Google trends today (06.05.11). Check out the vampire poem below.
As the new Twilight movie "New Moon" (starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) unleashes itself upon the world's cinemas it is clear that Vampire culture has never been so popular.
Twilight seems to bring completion to the recovery made by the vampire myth. Whilst historically vampires have always been figures of seduction, now they are objects of romance too! Popular culture suggests to us it's now possible to fall in love with a vampire and live to tell the tale or write the book, and that they might protect us and fight for us and love us.
The current vampire phenomenon is of course like gold dust for authors, film makers and TV producers alike. A few years ago, very few people would have been willing to inject cash into a vampire project but now they are springing up everywhere, with the recent "Cirque du Freak – The Vampire's Assistant" (starring John C Reilly and Salma Hayek) further testament to a vampire revival.
A few years ago before this remarkable comeback, when the vampire legend was shrinking away into the shadows, I wrote a poem, a villanelle simply entitled "Vampire Villanelle" about the last vampire in existence.
Vampire Villanelle
Wretched soul, shadow in the night
Last seduction, flickering fire
Fighting your fear, flirting with light.
One final damsel, hollow to bite
Ancient monster forced to expire
Wretched soul, shadow in the night.
Desert parched lips, empty delight
Diluted evil drains. Suspire
Fighting your fear, flirting with light.
Unquenchable thirst, the last rite
Ruby cup dry, icy sapphire.
Wretched soul, shadow in the night.
Eternity revoked. Finite
Darkness betrays, dwindles desire
Fighting your fear, flirting with light.
Survivor, alone in your plight
The last of your species, vampire!
Wretched soul, shadow in the night
Fighting your fear, flirting with light.
Who would have thought vampires would be where they are today?
