The prizes may be large or small, the egos may be even larger but one thing is certain, everyone wants to win their battle! There is no escaping reality TV at the moment (although there is often very little real about it) with show likes The Biggest Loser, Dancing with the Stars and I'm A Celebrity Get Me out of Here clogging up the schedules.
Here is a brief look at some of the reality TV shows currently vying for our precious viewing time:
The Biggest Loser: Lose pounds to win dollars is the aim of this show. Now in its eighth season, a group of often very overweight contestants are invited to take part in vigorous workouts and tasks in order to lose as many pounds as possible. The Prize: $250,000 for the one who loses the most weight. Some of the remaining contests in this year's show include Liz Young, Amanda Arlauskas, Allen Smith and Rudy Pauls.
I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here: This being a celebrity show, publicity is the aim of the game. Contestants or "celebrities" are paid to appear in the show so they may have already dug themselves out of a financial crisis before they even encounter the bushtucker trials and tribulations of an Australian jungle filled with insects and snakes. We, the public, get to watch them make fools of themselves as the early harmony in camp gives way to ego stroking and clinging to their fifteen minutes of fame by whatever means necessary. Current favourite Katie Price is rumoured to have been paid half a million quid to return to the show she appeared in 6 years earlier.
X Factor and American Idol: Masterminded by villain of the piece and judge Simon Cowell, members of the public are invited to singing auditions around their respective nations. Hundreds of thousands of hopefuls get whittled down to a select few, to do battle against each other at the end. Along the way, there are fits of laughter from judges and viewers alike as they get to see some of the very "Best" worst singers ever to grace television. It's cruel and humiliating and the public is left baying for more as they vote out their least favourites. The Prize: The winner, who in theory is the best singer in the competition (but doesn't always work out that way) earn themselves a record deal and the possibility of becoming a pop star/rock star.
Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Come Dancing: Once again, these are celebrity shows so it is assumed that contestants have already received their main prize of a signing on fee, with the promise of some bonus publicity and dance lessons thrown into the mix. A group of celebrities from the worlds of film, music, TV and sport are paired up with a professional dancer and commit to hours and hours of intense practice before competing in live TV shows. The worst or perhaps sometime more accurately "least favourite" couples get voted out week by week until we are left with champions to claim a trophy and title.
These are currently the hottest shows on TV and have been sold and replicated around the world, sometimes under the guise of different names. There are many other shows too, such as Project Runway, America 's Next Top Model and Survivor but which show will win the crown of greatest' reality TV show of all time and who will be The Biggest Loser? We will decide!
