If your name happens to be Britney Spears, Megan Fox, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga or Kim Kardashian then you are likely to have been thrown up in internet search results perhaps more than anything or anyone else this year.

It does make you wonder however, if the only people trawling the pages of Google, Yahoo, Bing and co are male! The late Michael Jackson was perhaps; inevitably the most searched for male of 2009, and in fact only twitter was a more searched for topic than the king of pop.

What is the world's fascination with tabloid style news and celebrity gossip? Why does there seem to be a compulsion to know everything about the "stars" lives? Do we not have enough to concern us in our own? Are we so bored that we must refuel on the comings and goings of people we are highly unlikely to ever meet? Are we so dissatisfied in our own "nine to five" lives that we covet and envy the lives of those that often seem to be filled with nothing but trauma?

Writers may have no interest in popular culture at all but if they wish to receive a pay check at the end of the month it is becoming more and more obvious that being well versed in celebrity doused current events is going to be very advantageous. Unless you are a respected author in your own right then it seems that journalists and especially internet writers need to follow the pack and become a member of the search engine paparazzi to even stay in touch and in tune.

What about articles about celebrities and celebrity culture (a bit like this one) that don't have any celebrity photos and pictures to sit alongside the text? It is more than likely they will suffer greatly in comparison with those that come bundled with glossy images of superstars, as yet more internet research suggests that internet readers only scan quickly through content, therefore pictures score very highly when there is just a small amount of text to digest, alongside. It seems we have returned to our childhood when pop ups and picture books were the only things that held our attention for more than a few minutes.

Imagination seems lost, news is no longer news and unless we write with great big letters and throw a few celebrity pics into the mix, our voice may be destined to go unheard. Anyway, better sign out and head to Google trends to keep tabs on the latest celeb scandals. Oh the joy!
