The Christmas gift guarantee in the title only applies if your loved ones and family posses a sense of humour. Okay, that's the disclaimer out of the way, now what are these wonderful cheap Christmas gift ideas that can bring much laughter to your home this festive season?

It all started for our family quite a few years ago, as I was shopping for some stocking fillers, you know, just some fun stuff to go along with the main presents. I found an alarm clock in one of those many "everything for a dollar" or "everything for a pound" stores that you see on the high street, and thought it was a decent little stocking filler, so just picked it up and thought nothing else of it until Christmas day itself.

When the family member in question opened the gift and discovered the little alarm clock, the look on her face was one of utter bemusement! I thought to myself, "It wasn't that bad for a stocking filler". She then turned the clock around to face me and both the hour hand and the minute hand were hanging limply at 6:30! Now of course it wasn't anywhere near that time and the battery was new so it should have be working fine, but as I took the clock from her I noticed that the "hands" were completely broken and whichever way you held the clock, that's where the hands would come to rest! It was in fact the most useless gift ever! Also proving that you usually get what you pay for!

After a few moments of puzzling and apologies, everyone erupted with laughter, perhaps more laughter that we had seen on Christmas day before! We laughed and laughed and laughed! From that moment, the idea was born that for future Christmases we would have a competition to see who could buy each other the worst, cheapest or most useless Christmas gift! Please understand, this practice doesn't rule out the buying of decent presents! But, if you are all in on the idea, then it really is a wonderful way of relieving some of those Christmas family tensions with laughter and bemusement galore!

The idea became so popular for us that every year, after all the cheap and broken gifts are open a general consensus is formed as to who is crowned, "The Best at Buying Useless Gifts!"

Following are just a few of the Prize Winners:

  1. Alarm Clock completely broken and completely useless
  2. A Coffee Mug Gift Set Missing the actual mug itself
  3. Chocolates That had already passed the "use before" date
  4. Numerous amounts of ugly, brightly coloured ornaments with or without pieces of masonry meant to be included.
  5. A radio that wouldn't tune in to any station, at all, ever!
  6. An umbrella with rips and holes in it.
You get the idea, but please keep in mind; all of these gifts were bought from stores. Second hand or deliberately broken gifts don't count. You will be amazed at some of the trash that some of these stores will sell you! Even good stores!

Hope you have fun and Merry Christmas!

No offence Julian, but I'm glad there's no chance of you picking my name in a gift exchange! Very funny. Have a wonderful Christmas.

I was all fired up until you gave us the "Second hand or deliberately broken gifts don't count" edict! Funny story, and a fantastic idea!
