The hottest thing this Christmas could well be James Cameron's new 3D spectacular, Avatar! His first Hollywood movie since Titanic made a splash in 1997 sees one of the most anticipated movies of the decade, if not of all time, with the promise of all new and revolutionary 3D and special effects techniques that could change the way films are made forever!
Whilst the look of the movie itself may be state of the art, the story looks like it will tread much more familiar ground with the humans versus aliens premise. So, if you don't "do" aliens then this huge movie event is likely to leave you a little cold, but at least you will be cold in 3D!
Of course, James Cameron doesn't really do small movies, with Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Aliens and The Abyss along with the biggest movie of all time, Titanic on his directorial CV.
If you love going to the movies at Christmas, then this could be the cracker for you to pull. If however, you can't get to the cinema for some reason then the Avatar experience can also be found on your Playstation3 and Xbox 360 in the shape of a movie themed video game. (Also including a 3D version if you have technology to make it work)
If science fiction isn't your thing, and you crave something a little more classical from your movie going experience, you will have to wait a bit longer, but there is a movie coming out called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! Yes, you read that correctly, Jane Austen's classic now with added zombies! What's that you say? Avatar it is then!

Okay, I have since seen the film, and opted for the 3D version. What's my verdict?
I was blown away by this movie in 3D (had not seen a modern movie in this format at the theatre before). Fantastic experience and truly recommended. I actually found myself wanting to swat some of the flies in the jungle scenes, that's how 3D it is!
The Story? Would I own it on DVD when it's more likely to be in its 2D format? Yes, but the story itself is nothing to get excited about. Sci Fi fans will have seen it all before but its still a really good action yarn. Competent and beautifully directed by Cameron. Go and see it in 3D though before you miss the chance. 9 out of 10!

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Well I have a problem with this movie even before I have seen it. I have heard about the political point of view and I probably will not see it because of that. You may think it's my loss but no it's the movies loss. Thank you for the article. I am sure that my point of view will not hurt the movie one bit but i still make it a matter of principle. Thanks for the comment Jim! I think i will check it out and see what all the fuss is about. Although i am not a fan of those pesky 3d glasses! Thanks again!
