It seems we all want something for nothing and the internet, pages of Google and other search engines are proof of this obsession with freebies! The title of the article lists just a few of the big hitters in the kingdom of free stuff. It doesn't seem to matter what the product is, if we can get away without paying for it, we most certainly will!
Where does all this free stuff come from and why is there never anything really decent that we can have for free? Honestly, if you had the choice between a few free pictures or a brand new free car, the car is going to win every time, but we never get offered a car do we, or a house, or a computer or for that matter anything of real value.
Free samples are about the closest you are really going to get to paying genuinely nothing for something and even these often have a condition attached, where you have to pay for something else. Take a trip to one of the many websites offering free things and you are sure to come across a price list of some nature! How does that work?
To be even more cynical, anything offered for free on the internet, you have already paid for, to some extent anyway. It is likely you had to buy a computer or pay to use someone else's; it is likely you are paying a monthly fee for an internet connection and it is likely that on every "free" product you search for, you will be bombarded with over top advertisements tempting you to pay for something else.
You can, however, read this article as many times as you like for free...or can you? I wonder which words will be cleverly highlighted to tempt you away from this page and off to some "free" offers.
Is it really possible that nothing is free and we are, in some way, really going to be paying for all those movies, music and games listed in the article title?
I even had to pay for the heating, lighting and coffee as I wrote these words. Shocking!

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Great article. Well done. The thing with the internet is that if someone offers a product at a price someone else can set up the same thing and make ad money from it. The internet is so competitive now and if you can offer a product for free you probably will have to.
Could you imagine YouTube, Twitter or FaceBook's popularity if you had to pay for it?
Thanks for the comment Connor. You are right, some things are "free", monetarily at least but there is usually a payment, agreement entered into or a transaction of some kind along the way. Thanks for reading, much appreciated. Julian
