Hurt Locker has won 6 Academy Awards at this year's Oscar Ceremony, including one for Best Director, all the more significant because Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to ever win in the Best Director category.
Although Hurt Locker had been highly fancied to pick up some awards this year and indeed had been doing very well in many of the pre Oscar award ceremonies, this is still very much a David and Goliath story as Bigelow's Hurt Locker went toe to toe with the mighty Avatar, ironically directed by Bigelow's ex husband James Cameron.
During the run up to the awards season, culminating in last night's Oscars, I wonder how many had even heard of the Hurt Locker movie, let alone actually seen it?
Head and shoulders the best movie dealing with the conflicts in Iraq to date, it suffered the same fate as its predecessors (In the valley of Elah, Home of the Brave etc) and was almost a complete washout at the box office. In fact it ran for only a solitary week in my local cinema complex.
Avatar meanwhile became the highest grossing movie ever and despite its debut back in December, is still showing in many theatres over two months on.
I enjoyed both movies, the huge spectacle of Avatar's 3D wonderment on the big screen and the explosive impact of Hurt Locker on DVD. Which movie stays with me longer? Well, apart from the 3D flies I tried to swat in the jungles of Avatar, Hurt Locker is a movie that hits hard and it's the movie I would choose to watch multiple times and not get bored.
Of course if you hate war and conflict movies, it's highly unlikely you will fall in love with Hurt Locker and unless you enjoy a good slice of science fiction you may well be left out in the cold with Oscars 2010's big two.
Other notable winners were Sandra Bullock, best actress for The Blind Side and Jeff Bridges, best actor for Crazy Heart but all the talk was about Hurt Locker and, in my mind at least, deservedly so.
