A cloud of volcanic smoke and ash is heading south across the UK and towards mainland Europe.

Almost all air travel has been cancelled within the UK, with no flights expected in or out of the country for the rest of the day. The volcano eruption in Iceland has sent tonnes of ash into the atmosphere, making air travel extremely dangerous. Apparently ash is as dangerous as an ice build up on engines and machines.

Thousands of people are stranded not only in the UK attempting to leave the UK, but also in countries around the world as inbound flights are suspended due to the cloud of ash drifting high above Great Britain and Scandinavia.

Glasgow and Edinburgh airports were some of the first to be disrupted and there are no flights leaving or entering Scottish airspace. Manchester airport along with Heathrow and Gatwick are all suspending flights indefinitely while officials watch and wait to see what happens with this huge volcanic eruption.

People with travel plans are being advised to contact their airlines for the very latest information. This is the second eruption of an Icelandic volcano this month and experts are warning that the situation could yet become much worse.
