The United Kingdom's first ever live television debate between Prime Minister Gordon Brown and those who long to fill his shoes, David Cameron and Nick Clegg saw, perhaps, Lib Dem Clegg striking the first blow for public affection.

In true USA Presidential debate style, though with markedly less razzamatazz, the leading UK politicians went head to head on the big issues ahead of the general election on May 6 th 2010. Polls are suggesting that Nick Clegg won this first war of words as the election race heats up.

All three leaders looked nervous and apprehensive as the cameras rolled but it was Clegg who seemed to adapt and settle in the quickest and whilst Labour and Conservative seemed intent on taking pot shots at each other it was the Lib Dem message of change that reverberated when the debate was over.

Nick Clegg spoke confidently and clearly and in a remarkably honest assessment of the country's problems, admitted that he didn't have all the answers but that he would strive to work and to find solutions.

Whether this honesty will be enough to convince the public to take the country in a dramatic new direction is another matter but there is no denying that Mr Clegg had an air of young Tony Blair about him, reminding us of a time when the UK was last on its knees and desperate for change.

Certainly an interesting twist then, as UK politics made history with the live debate and the audience is expected to grow for the second of three debates on April 22 nd .
