World Cup 2010 is now just days away from its big kick off in South Africa. June 11 th will see the opening ceremony and the opening matches of perhaps the biggest sporting event in the world.

More than 2 years ago, 204 countries entered the preliminary stages of the FIFA World Cup and after qualifying groups across the continents we are down to the final 32 teams who will compete in South Africa 2010 for the biggest prize in world soccer.

Already the nerves are jangling as the big day approaches, with some high profile players already getting injured and set to miss the tournament. England’s Rio Ferdinand, the latest star to miss out through injury. Didier Drogba of the Ivory Coast is also rated as doubtful after fracturing an arm in a warm up match against Japan.

Brazil and Spain are currently joint favourites to lift the trophy but let’s have a look at all the teams seeking football glory in the next few weeks.

Group A: France, Mexico, South Africa and Uruguay

Group B: Argentina, Greece, South Korea and Nigeria

Group C: Algeria, England, Slovenia and USA

Group D: Australia, Germany, Ghana and Serbia

Group E: Cameroon, Denmark, Japan and Holland

Group F: Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia

Group H: Chile, Honduras, Spain and Switzerland

So, all the contenders are ready and it will be host nation, South Africa who will be honoured with the first match as they take on Mexico on Friday afternoon with Uruguay V France following later in the evening.

Brazil will play North Korea on June 15 th and fellow favourites Spain have to wait until the very last game of the opening round of matches on June 16 th when they play Switzerland.

Who are some of the star names to look out for in World Cup 2010? We have already mentioned Messi but there will be plenty of brilliance on show.

Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Drogba (if fit), Torres, Villa, Fabregas, Xavi, Ronaldo, Milito, Van Persie, Aguero, Kaka, Tevez, Eto’o, Forlan, Robben, Ribery and many others hoping to hit the soccer headlines!

This was an excellent summary of what the World Cup is and what it offers to fans as well as viewers. Football is one of those sports that a sizeable part of the world follows and enjoys. The article is worth a read as it is informative to football first-timers as well as interesting to football enthusiasts.
It is amazing what interest this event creates across the world. Just a ball kicked around by just 22 players is the cause of so much speculation and enthusiasm. Someone recently in the media even classed football and the world cup a religion. The 'christmas' of football, its highlight,  could then be the world cup. The article, though more factual than promotional, yet inspires the reader and the watcher to look forward to a season of celebration: with so many nations celebrating skill, style, talent and humanity.

Well, it's been a world cup full of suprises and controversy, even if the football itself has often failed to live up to expectations. At least one of the favourites, Spain made it to the final (some would argue without playing thier best and indeed losing their first match) and I don't think anyone really, truly expected to see the Netherlands in the final but it should make for a decent game and hopefully the tournament will finish with a flourish. Holland V Spain, World Cup Final 2010, 11th July 2010.
