“And the BAFTA for best leading actor goes to...Colin Firth!”
That’s right; many believe that nothing short of a miracle will prevent Colin Firth picking up this year’s Best Actor award as the prestigious ceremony gets under way. Although the British actor, who starred in the acclaimed drama, “The King’s Speech”, faces some seriously tough competition from the likes of James Franco, Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges and Jesse Eisenberg, it is widely believed that it is already in the bag for Firth.
The BAFTA’s, already a fairly British occasion, notably and consistently rewarding British talent (and why not), could be dominated again by British winners this evening, with the King’s speech nominated in 14 categories. Christian Bale (The Fighter), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) and the late Pete Postlethwaite (The Town) could be other British acting winners, while Danny Boyle will be hoping to spring a surprise as director of “127 Hours” and repeat his Slumdog Millionaire success.
Favourite for the best leading actress award is Natalie Portman for her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, where she will fight it out with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening (The Kids are Alright), Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit).
One award definitely already sorted out is for Sir Christopher Lee, who will be accepted into the Academy Fellowship which is effectively a Hall of Fame award and certainly well deserved.
So, is anyone willing to bet against Colin Firth? Watch this space as I will add the winners as they are announced.
