The Royal Wedding, memorabilia, souvenirs and merchandise go hand and hand together just as much as a Sporting Cup Final or massive movie and music events. You can rest assured that as we head towards the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, that there will be plenty of Royal wedding themed items available for purchase, to treasure the memories forever!
Despite popularity for the royal family waning in recent years, there are still millions (many of whom will watch the event live on TV) of people in the UK and indeed around the Commonwealth and the rest of World who love a good old fashioned, fairytale royal wedding. The marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton is going to be extremely popular, with many still holding great affection for William’s mum, Diana, the “People’s Princess” and William himself being a very well liked Prince.
You may have already seen the mugs, plates, books, flags, teapots and biscuit tins appearing in all kinds of stores who are hoping to cash in on the wedding of the century (so far at least!).
There is no way of knowing for certain which piece of memorabilia or which souvenir may turn out to hold more value than a decent cup of tea, but the chances are that the more mass produced it is, the less likely you will have a collectible antique of the future.
Your £4.99 china mug with the smiling pictures of William and Kate on the side may make coffee a time of joy for some but it’s unlikely to net you a fortune in years to come.
Comedy souvenirs tend to do quite well, especially if they are quite rare. Who remembers the Charles and Diana “Spitting Image” mugs? They are worth a pretty penny now if they are intact.
Collectability can often be the key. If your souvenirs are sought after, and there are plenty of Royal collectors out there, then you may have a winner on your hands.
By all means, enjoy the build up to the Royal Wedding on April 29th2011 with some quirky and perhaps some not so quirky bits of merchandise but please remember that most of it will be mass produced and relatively worthless, so try to avoid paying over the odds for your next china plate, even if it does smile royally back at you!

The Commonwealth institute in Kensington where all those Flags once flown is an abandoned site. There is no direct mention of the European Union member states in the above.
