Wayne Rooney on Twitter! The Manchester United and England star striker is just one of a host of football players that have signed up to Twitter. It’s clearly a great way for them to get in touch with their often massive fan base as Rooney amassed over 300,000 followers in just a few days.
Celebrities on Twitter are not a new phenomenon but there does seem to be massive influx of soccer players and sports stars now using the social network to share their thoughts and feelings, often with mixed results.
The early signs for Wayne Rooney are good. To the cynical it could look like a very cleverly thought out PR exercise, especially after the Man United star has had to endure torrid headlines for the past 12 months, but during the his first week of tweeting, Rooney appears to have been very amenable with both sporting friends and others.
However, it appears to be celebrities away from the world of sport that seem to grab the most Twitter followers. For quite some time Britney Spears led the way and at the time of writing has more than 7 million followers. She has been overtaken though, with both Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber boasting more than 9 million followers with Gaga leading by a few hundred thousand.
Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey complete the current “most followed” top 10 list.
We have to drop down to 26thposition to find our first sports celebrity in the form of basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal with cyclist Lance Armstrong in 49th, extreme sports hero Tony Hawk in 64thand tennis star Serena Williams in 90th.
With more and more football players joining the Twitter ranks though, one wonders how long it will be before a star of the world game can challenge the top twitter celebrities and knock them of their tweeting perch. I am pretty sure an active David Beckham twitter account would challenge the leaders!
