Seve Ballesteros has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 54. One of the greatest golfers to have played the game died at the age of 54 on Saturday morning (7thMay 2011).

A hugely popular sportsman, Ballesteros helped to drag golf into the modern era by the way he played and his career was littered with trophies and accolades, not to mention green jackets for his performances at the Augusta Masters. In fact, a tally of 87 titles (including 5 majors) is all the proof needed of his sporting prowess.

After a career spanning more than 30 years, Seve Ballesteros retired in 2007 and was diagnosed with a brain tumour just a year later. The star had multiple operations to remove the tumour as well as going through chemotherapy but on May 7th2011 lost his battle with the disease.

As the tributes from around the world begin to pour in, a testimony to his sporting greatness as well as his general popularity away from golf is evidence that this great man will be sadly missed.

RIP Seve Ballesteros (9 April 1957 – 7 May 2011)
