Samoa have outlined plans to switch time zones and jump forward a day in order to align itself with the trading markets of Austrailia, New Zealand and Eastern Asia.

If the plans go ahead, then they will see Samoa erasing a day from its calendar, it has been proposed that December 31st will be skipped altogether and thus celebtrating New Year’s day at the same time as Australia and New Zealand.

A country that has been famous for being the last place on earth to see the sunset to becomone one of the first nations that will see the sun rise each morning!

In a somewhat mind boggling bit of time travel, Samoans could then celebrate special occasions, such as birthdays and Christmas for two days, one after the other. Under the new proposals, Samoa would share the time with Australians whilst those living on American Samoa will remain on Western US time.

The Samoan Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi  explained it like this, “You can have two birthdays, two weddings and two wedding anniversaries on the same date – on separate days – in less than an hour's flight across (the ocean), without leaving the Samoan chain”

This is not the first time that the time traveling nation has juggled with its calendar. In 1892, Samoa switched to the East side of the International Date Line.

It will be interesting to follow these events and see if the proposals are approved. I certainly think the idea of having double celebrations could provide a huge boost to the Samoan tourist industry.
