Wouter Weylandt Dies - Cyclist Killed during Giro d’Italia Race Crash

Cyclist Wouter Weylandt has died after falling during stage three of the Giro d’Italia on Monday 9thMay 2011. Weylandt who was 26, fell whilst travelling at high speed during the race.

Reports suggest that the Belgian cyclist, who rode for the Leopard – Trek team, lay motionless at the side of the road while paramedics did their best to save him. The tragedy occurred about 12 miles from the finish, during a descent of Passo del Bocco, which is near the town of Mezzanego (East of Genoa).

Wouter Wellandt had several stage victories to his name, including the very stage (Giro d’Italia Stage 3 2010) that claimed his life.

The world of cycling and sport in general is in great shock after this devastating event. The last fatal crash at this level of professional cycling was in 1995, when Fabio Casartelli of Italy was killed in a crash at the Tour de France.
