Father’s Day Poems - A Gift In Memory of Dad

A Father’s Day poem written in memory of dad has become both a tribute and an emotional treasure each time it is read or viewed by anyone that knew him.

My dad and I had a strange relationship. Not strange as in unloving or unkind but strange as in we didn’t really communicate much, we were very different people with very different interests and although we didn’t say “I love you” very much, if at all, the fact, the love was still known.

My dad died at 53, after a short battle with lung cancer in 1995, when I was still in my early twenties. He was a rough edged gentleman (if there is such a thing) always willing to help those in trouble and someone who is still talked about fondly by the most unlikely people, 16 years on.

I remember both with sadness and joy that we only became really close friends near the end. Sadness and regret that it took so long, joy that it actually happened at all.

This is not really an article about my dad’s death, traumatic though it was, but a tribute to the quiet, unsung hero that he was to many. Years later and taking up a poetry challenge, I was asked to write a poem of exactly 100 words, which told a story with a beginning, middle and an end.

With Father’s day approaching once more, I felt the time was right to share it with the world.

This is the story, the poem of my dad’s life in 100 words.

Ordinary...Great

Humbly born with veins to toil

Sandpaper edged facade

Invisible to the masses,

Alive in lumberyards.

Years of sweat and not a little blood

An ordinary flower did bloom

Blossomed into greatness,

Shook free mundane cocoon.

Respect bestowed as legend grew

About a silent warrior

Yet evil heard upon that breeze

And latched itself to bronchia.

The end declared, a deal was done

Handshakes with Monsieur Brevity

Crimson surge, fountains red,

Real scenes scream unreality.

Concluding chapter of a tale that tells

Of a man so simple and straight

He made a place, left a mark.

He was ordinary. Great!

What a tremendous tribute to your Dad. In life we need the 'ordinary' people far more than the noble or rich. Very touching.
