Rafael Nadal wins French Open 2011 defeating Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1.

Nadal and Federer are perhaps the greatest rivals in the modern era of tennis and on Sunday 5thJune 2011 they meet again in a Grand Slam Final in Paris. There is even a Wikipedia page dedicated entirely to their rivalry.

In a first set of incredible tennis from both players, Nadal fought back from 2-5 down and set point against him to win 5 games in a row and take the set 7-5.

Many believe that Roger Federer is the greatest player of all time whilst very few will argue that Nadal is the greatest clay court player ever, so this really is a case of two awesome tennis players competing head to again at the top of their sport.

Rafa already has 5 French Open wins to his name, while Federer has just the 1.

Nadal seems to have taken early control of the second set and as I write he just taken a 2-0 lead and to take his run to seven straight games.

Can Federer fight back after such a promising opening or is the writing on the wall already? Regular updates here.

Federer fights back from break points to hold serve and Nadal leads 3-2 second set, but crucially with a break.

Nadal holds to take a 4-2 lead, second set.

After 3 previous break points in the 8th game, Federer takes the 4th and this second set is back on! 4-4

Rain Stops Play in French Open Final

Some great shots from both players but with Nadal serving for the second set at 5-4 and deuce, the play is suspended because of the rain that has begun to fall! Tennis fans will have to wait a bit longer...

The rain delay was short and as play resumed both players exchanged game points and Federer takes the break of serve. 5-5 second set.

Federer holds his next service game comfortably and Nadal is serving to stay in the second set at 5-6. Two great players...living up to the billing.

Nadal holds, so we have a tie break to decide this set. Nadal takes the tie break 7-3 and with it holds a 2 set lead...a mountain to climb for Roger Federer now.

French Open Final 3rd Set

Third set going with serve at present. 2-2. No sign of a great comeback from Federer just yet.

That could be that...a break for Nadal who now leads 4-2 and serving. But...wait...Federer has 3 breaks points for an immediate response and takes it! 4-3 Nadal but back on serve.

Federer hanging in there and now it's 5-5, 3rd set, on serve.

Federer has his break and now leads 6-5 and will serve for the third set and begin the comeback!

Roger Federer takes the third set 7-5. Game on!

Battle commences in the fourth set with three consecutive service holds. 2-1 Nadal.

The killer blow? Nadal takes the first break of the fourth set and leads 3-1.

Nadal breaks again and surely must clinch the title this time...5-1 he leads in the fourth and by 2 sets to 1.

Nadal wins in four sets to take his 6th French Open win.

The Winner of Roland Garros 2011 is: Rafael Nadal
