What follows is a selection of useful tips and ideas for when in the middle of your DIY and interior design projects.

  1. If you are looking to re-cover some old chairs on a real budget, then consider dust sheets! New dust sheets are often really cheap but the material is hard wearing and if you are going for the creamy/white finish then these dust sheets could save you a fortune, provided you have a staple gun handy!
  2. Painting fireplace tiles – You may have moved into a home that has the most hideous fireplace tiles. Rather than replace the whole fireplace (which may come at a later date), why not simply give the existing tiles and surround a lick of paint. You can get “one coat” tile paint so this is a really quick and easy job. See your fireplace transformed overnight!
  3. If you are looking to coordinate the colours in your room, consider purchasing an extra cushion or two. With the surplus cushions, neatly cut out the fabric and place it into photo frames (as you would a normal photograph) and you have yourself readymade pieces of wall art that fit perfectly with your scheme!
  4. It may well be time for a new kitchen but you simply don’t have the thousands that it will take, available. Why not try and freshen your existing kitchen up a little? Painting the units may go some way to cleaning things up a bit, but go the extra mile and replace all the handles/knobs with something a little more modern and this can make a massive difference in appearance.
  5. How can you get rid of ugly pine panelling without replacing everything? Once more, perhaps a drop of paint may come to your rescue. Especially good for pine panelling on the bath...use an undercoat primer and then re-cover with a paint colour that matches the rest of your bathroom suite. Hey presto! No more pine panelling!
  6. Ugly kitchen/bathroom tiles – As you did with the fireplace tiles earlier, use specialised tile paint and transform those rooms.
  7. Curtain Pole Conundrum – In an ideal world you would love to buy new curtain poles as the old ones no longer blend in with your newly decorated home. Once again, the paint may come to the rescue. Ensure that you remove the curtain poles before painting though, and put a dust sheet down to prevent any mess, then spray paint them with your desired finish and whilst it may be a temporary fix, at least the poles no longer offend you when you look at them!

Exhaustively written and full of detail. Just because I am not "handy" does not mean that I do not appreciate all that you have covered here. Great article.
