Peter Falk, best known for his role as TV detective Columbo has died at the age of 83. He passed away at his Beverly Hills home on Thursday night, 23rdJune 2011.

An Oscar nominated and Emmy award winning actor, Peter Falk will undoubtedly be remembered for playing Lieutenant Columbo in 68 episodes (including TV Movies) of the TV detective show. He last appeared as the character in 2003.

In recent years the actor was known to be suffering from Alzheimer's disease and his last credited acting role was in a project called “American Cowslip” alongside Val Kilmer, Rip Torn, Dianne Ladd and Bruce Dern.

He also appeared alongside Nicholas Cage and Jessica Biel in action blockbuster "Next", with Vince Vaughn, John Favreau in "Made" and was in a voiceover cast with Angelina Jolie, Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Jack Black and Martin Scorsese in the animated movie "Shark Tale".

In 1960 and 1961, Falk received back to back Oscar Nominations (supporting actor) for his roles in Murder Inc. and Pocketful of Miracles alongside Glenn Ford.

His performance as Columbo earned him 4 Emmy awards as the show initially ran for 6 years between 1971 and 1977.

Despite the show being cancelled in 1977, it is testament to the popularity of the character and the actor himself that TV Movie versions of the show were still being commissioned until 2003.

RIP Peter Falk aka Columbo.
