Switzerland may be more famous for its skiing holidays in the winter months but this majestic country is equally as stunning during the summer. The Valais Canton in Switzerland will always hold a special place in my holiday memories.
It was the first time I had set foot outside of the UK and so was a real adventure of discovery and my first introduction to the wider world, albeit a relatively short step into Europe. I was on a budget of course so my first “overseas” trip involved not a single aeroplane. The bus journey took around 30 hours and had my face not been glued to the window taking in the sights, it could have felt a very long time indeed!
All of the buildings looked typically “Alpine” and everywhere was spotlessly clean. A milky blue river ran through the middle of the village, as did a lovely little railway.
A walkers and climbers paradise, it was also a good location to take in the many day trips on offer. In no particular order, here are some of my highlights.
Interlaken – A very popular tourist destination and a beautiful town surrounded by the Swiss Alps and between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. I have to say I have never shopped in such a picturesque place before or since! Again, everything remarkably clean and each step is a delight to behold. Spend some time in the shops or take a boat trip on the lake and soak in the beauty.
Leukerbad Thermal Baths – A very special place high in the mountains with outdoor thermals baths and pools. Relax in the whirlpools and Jacuzzis, the sun beating down from a clear blue sky (at least when I was there!) gazing at the snow tipped mountains and wish you could stay there forever.
Aletsch Glacier – Take a cable car into the mountains and witness the breathtaking Aletsch glacier as it winds and grinds its way between peaks, a giant river of ice and rock. Take in vistas of the mighty Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch. Wow!
Lauterbrunnen and Staubbach Falls – Seeing is believing as the waterfalls cascade down sheer rock faces of more than 800 feet, making them some of the highest in Europe.
I really am only scratching the surface here of what was a fantastic and memorable holiday in Switzerland. I haven’t even mentioned the fantastic day out at the historic city of Lucerne or the trip into the mountains to overlook Lake Lugano on the Italian border which were also amazing!
If you have never been to Switzerland, it certainly comes highly recommended.
