Phone hacking is illegal and it is at the centre of one of the biggest scandals to hit the UK in recent years. The News of the World, a weekly tabloid newspaper has effectively been forced to close its doors and cease publication as a result of its alleged involvement in the scandal.

The story is far too big and too complex to deal with in its entirety here, so let’ just try and take a brief look at the basic outline.

As I understand it, in order to generate news, certain individuals at certain newspapers have employed tactics that are not only extremely unethical but also illegal. It appears that the drive for a breaking news story in this sector is so high that these desperate measures have been employed in order to be first past the post in delivering a headline.

Ironically, there a plenty of websites that can deliver precise and detailed instructions of how to hack a phone, despite this being technically illegal. As with the scandal itself, it appears that there are various kinds and methods of phone hacking that are too complicated to go into here, but essentially it seems this story deals with the kind that involves acquiring personal and private information from other people’s mobile or cell phones.

In July 2011 the story seems to have reached its head and the scandal has been blown wide open (although it is likely further revelations will continue to be unveiled for some time to come) but the whole saga could date back to 2006 and beyond.

In a world now apparently dictated to by celebrity and tabloid culture it has taken revelations of what some would consider being of a far more sensitive nature to truly snowball these events.

Politicians, celebrities, sports stars and even Royalty have been subject to the phone hacking scandal during the past few years but the latest allegations are that family members of 7/7 attack victims and even a murdered school girl (while she was still unaccounted for) had their phones hacked by investigators and reporters.

At the time of writing, there are various police investigations under way with the full support of Prime Minister David Cameron, arrests are being made and the long history of the News of the World newspaper will come to an end on Sunday July 10thwith its final edition.

"Thank You & Goodbye" declares the last edition of the News of the World. (Updated 09.07.11)
